On Photographic Realism

he claim of the photograph to represent the "real" has come under such sustained challenge in recent years that emphases on the documentary value of the medium may seem at best naive. But the common-sense notion of the referential value of the photograph is evidenced by its wide and continuing use in everyday life. My essay looks at some of the epistemological questions surrounding this paradox, based on a reflection on the positions of Andre Bazin.
